Honestly you don't need to go crazy. Get a blackbook (nothing fancy, just a sketch pad either hardback or softback cover), some pencils and erasers. Later on you can worry about markers and other stuff.

Work on handstyle first and the rest will come along. Do not rush it and write out the entire alphabet as often as you can make yourself.

first thing you wanna do is to start connecting with writers. if you've got any social skills, having a simple conversation with someone with whom you've established some trust (remember, not everyone is open to chatting about graff) will give you a lot of insight into it.

get exposed to and take in as much information and knowledge about the whole graffiti world before even choosing a name for yourself let alone starting to practice handstyles (which many deem as step 1)

my step 1 is learning before actually practicing. watch documentaries. watch the essential viewing like style wars and shit. check out the most viewed graff videos on youtube etc... learn as much as you can and then go in totally informed and with a clear purpose.

    best of luck!

How is a good way to connect with other writers? That’s why I’m on here because I’ve never met another writer - there isn’t in my area. So I don’t know if my style is whack- it probably is.

go on a bike ride around your town, find the person with the most names and look them up on insta, tiktok, facebook, youtube etc. if you cant find them you'll eventually run into them at some point.

start simple. get a shitty notebook and try writing the name you choose simple, and get up before determining style. better to be up as a toy then not up at all. you'll pick things up online, but don't take them letter for letter, and be influenced by them. best way to find your style is learning from the best. as you can see all the writers on youtube write very simple with small additions for extra style and pizazz, try this and add a swirl at the end of your R or something. have fun with it and just go crazy in that notebook.

I like your replies but there are no tags here. Nobody goes over my pieces- only myself! Only recognition I get is people upset and complaining they don't like lettering. I don't want interest like that- I want recognition from others doing lettering. I don't want to stand out because it's the only tag- I want to know if it's any good or if I'm improving.

try going to another city that might be nearby, if you live in a small town chances are you can bike for a while and be almost 2 towns away. for me there is a bike trial i follow to another city and there's more writers there

There is a well known event called 'Meeting of Styles' where that are plenty of artists/writers. Here is the link for the upcoming events!
