07.03 Immigration: Graphic Organizer Directions: Read the journal excerpts and poem while completing the graphic organizer. Evaluate the opinions of Americans at the turn of the 20th century and today concerning immigrants and immigration in general. Immigrant Journals Lee Chew Mary Antin What is the main idea expressed in the author’s journal? America's discrimination against China America is wonderful, and everything is free. Is the author happy or unhappy with his/her experience in America? Unhappy Very happy. Explain one experience the author had that reflects his/her view of America. Noone would hire any race if they could get chinese employees, which led to racial slander She was brought to school by a stranger, no questions asked, and given an education, for education is free in america. List at least three words from the journal entries that reflect the author’s point of view toward America. Heathen, no backbone, injustice Free, Bright, Safe In at least two well organized paragraphs, please address the following questions: How do the three writers differ in their attitude toward immigrants? Do you think the ideas of Americans today on immigrants are different or similar to the ideas expressed on the base of the Statue of Liberty? If so, how? All three of these Authors are in favor of immigration, but not in exactly the same way. Both Antin and Lazarus are on the same page, But Lee Chew has a much more aggressive viewpoint. Antin is herself a happy immigrant, and speaks of the joys of this country, and the warm welcome she received, and Lazarus says that america welcomes everyone, even the exiles of other countries. Meanwhile Lee Chew, who is chinese, says that all the european workers are either drunkards, ignorant, or criminals, and that Chinese workers are Far superior. Unlike Antin and Lazarus, he did not fine America welcoming at all. I disagree, right now one of the subject of our political enthusiats is on immigration itself. Workers come from Mexico to do nearly anything to get a taste of the american dream, working harder and for less than American citezins. The inscription talks about accepting anyone into our country, but much like what happened to the Chinese, they are being forced out of the country and sent home. If we were able to learn from the past, we could have a much more efficient work force, and stronger economy. holy shit thats long
