In A Passage to India, author E.M. Forster proves his claim that “politics…ruin the character and career” through the characters he creates, particularly his British characters. With the notable exceptions of Ms. Quested and Mrs. Moore, women new to India, and Mr. Fielding, who remains mysteriously unbiased despite a great length of time in India, the rest of Forster’s English characters transferred to India are crusty, cynical beings devoid of love and, in most cases, basic tolerance of the native Indians. Prime examples of this intolerance can be found in Ronny, Mrs. Burton, and Major Callender. Additionally, careers are also ruined by politics. It is an occupational graveyard; those who come to India and get politically involved rarely leave, and are hard-pressed to advance. And those who do their jobs well often get damaged or held back by these same politics.
Early in Chapter Five, Ronny makes the observation to Mrs. Turton that, “no one who’s here matters [, and] those who matter don’t come,” to which she responds, “Absolutely true.” India is not a place that helps political careers; like Forster comments, it is a place that hinders them. This observation seems to be valid for all the characters in the book, political or not: Aziz stands little chance of being promoted, for he is an Indian doctor working under the British Major Callender. Similarly, none of Aziz’s Indian friends stand any chances of being promoted to positions of superiority for the same reason: their skin color. For political reasons and ease of ruling, it is far easier to keep the Indians thoroughly suppressed then to let a few advance. But this lack of opportunity is hardly picky. Even the English seem to be under this curse. The Turtons, the ruling English political figures, and widely acknowledged by the Indians to be like “little gods” to them, live in a house that, though “enormous,” is also “low” and “uncomfortable.” According to Forster, they would die “exiled from glory,” with nothing to show for their service.
Nor is it a secret that politics ruins individual characters. With the same above exceptions, Forster’s English political characters have been dramatically changed by their time in India, and usually for the worse. A perfect example of this phenomenon is Mrs. Turton, who, after a long time of service to the Crown as a chief political figure in Aziz’s town, refuses to even shake the hands of her Chandraporean constituents. “I refuse to shake hands with any of the men,” she remarks; later on, she cements her gross intolerance by saying, “They ought never to have been allowed to drive in; it’s so bad for them.” This is the tale of a woman who has been hardened for the worse by having been in politics. Similarly, Major Callender, the civil surgeon at Chandrapore, calls in a second doctor to go and check on Aziz when he calls in sick, to make sure that he is actually unable to work, despite not having a history of unwarranted absence; in fact, Callender acknowledges earlier in the book that Aziz is the better doctor of the two of them. Perhaps he feels a need to remind Aziz of his perpetual distrust of Indians, as well as his higher political and social status; as Forster comments, “There they [are]! Politics again!”
By proving that politics is poisonous for both the career and the character, Forster succeeds in making a comment about the futility of political careers and the dangers associated with accruing political power. It is no wonder, then, why, when pressed, the wise Professor Fielding decided to avoid the politically charged question, “How is England justified holding India?” He simply responds, “It’s a question I can’t get my mind on to.” A wise choice, Professor.

...i guess i got an entire essay...
