I’ve just gotten into graffiti but have no idea how to design tag letters. Does the style just come naturally once you gain experience? Where should I start?

Starting out, it's all about flow and what comes naturally to write. When I first chose the name "Foe", I liked it because it began with a sharp, strong F, followed by two soft, round vowels. I later added the "one" for the same reason, another round vowel, a sharp N, and rounded out with a final soft vowel. When thrown up on a wall, it grabs the readers attention, evens out, hits them again and comes to a close, like a college term paper haha. As I kept writing and writing, it grew so natural that now I throw it up as a one-liner. But that's just handstyles.

As far as bombs and pieces go, I would steal copies of UNDER PRESSURE and THE SOURCE and draw what I saw. Then I was like "That's dope, but I would do it THIS way" and my own style started to evolve without biting. There's nothing wrong with drawing influence from other writers while still being original. And don't afraid to be a toy. We all were. Hang out with writers more experienced than you who aren't dicks. I had plenty of older friends I would paint with who'd be like "Nah, that structure don't flow at all, here check this" and show me a new technique. Mentors are important if yer lucky enough to have them. Also, go hard hard hard. Be a toy. Be new. Throw some wack ass shit on the wall and then, once you find yer flow, take back yer old spot and watch everyone be like "Damn, KRSDZ is killin it now."

Also, it depends on yer intent. In the book "ALL CITY", there's an interview with EARL. It starts out like "EARL's tag is like a pimple on the ass of a syphilis-infected whore. Get rid of one and two more pop up. His style is horrible but it's too late to change it now." But EARL doesn't care. All he cares about is writing his name on shit, everywhere, all of the time. His style might be ugly as fuck, but it's THERE and he's getting up and you notice it. There's nothing wrong with that either. Some people will rock out a 30-color piece once a month. Others will walk around town all day, every day with markers and mops soaking out of they backpack. Either is fine and there is plenty of middle-ground.

I posted this in the TAGS thread (I don't often take flicks of my shit, so sorry for the repetition) and my style may be ugly as hell, but it flows. I like how the mop just flows through my hands over years and years of just bumping out the same six letters. Ain't no standards or anyone to impress if you just wanna get yer shit out.

Thanks, homie. I guess I've been bombin roughly 20 years now. Taken some time off here and there due to girls, work, jail, ya know. Life stuff. But probably the most active I've been in a decade.

I've never been locked up for longer than a few weeks. My last stint was about 2 months. I'm a bomber but I piece occasionally when I can afford the paint. Shit is mad expensive these days, so I stick mostly to reckless throw-ups and fill-ins. Piecing is fun but it's so time-consuming and dangerous and I feel a way about legal walls. I'd rather just run around and put my name on everything and go all-city in the course of a week.

I still put thought and effort into my bombing. It's not just mindless vandalism. I perfect my craft. It might only be 3 colors, but my name is literally on the line and I wanna make sure my shit looks dope. Bombing is an art on its own. I like to go hard and catch wreck, but it's still give ya a lil candy for yer eye.
